Streamlining Herron's VCD Internship Experience
THE PROJECT
We were given the opportunity to redesign an aspect of the Herron student experience. I worked with four other designers to identify a problem space that would benefit from a people-centered design thinking approach. OUR QUESTION How might we streamline the Herron VCD Internship Experience? REQUIREMENTS – Create an Experience Map with participation by all group members. – Each person needs to design one final deliverable. |
GENERATIVE RESEARCH
Method One: Public Quantitative Method
My group determined eleven phases within the existing internship program. We used the public quantitative method to find pain points in the process.
Pain Point #1: All students don't have the same preparation for the internship process.
Pain Point #2: The internship information students receive is often outdated or inaccurate, leading to frustration and confusion.
Pain Point #3: Some internships are unpaid, which results in students needing financial assistance.
Method Two: Interviews
Interview #1: I had a one-on-one phone interview with the current internship mentor, Paula Differding. Paula created Herron's internship program. After 33 years, she was planning her retirement at the time we talked. She was very open about strengths and weaknesses in the existing program.
Interview #2: The entire group talked with incoming internship mentor, Steve Williams, to get his feedback on changes he planned to make.
Method Three: Survey
We created a survey on Google Forms to send to Herron VCD Alumni who have hired interns from our program.
